SKIL
Controls - Emission Monitor:
Skil Visible Emission Monitor for Environmental
Protection Model 252
Opacity and Particulates Monitor
Throughout the world, environmental protection has become
a major issue, with the need to reduce the emissions into the atmosphere.
For many years smoke and fine particulate emissions have been known to
be one of the main air pollutants.
With the introduction of legislation to reduce air pollution,
the need to monitor smoke and dust emissions has been extended across
all industrial processes emitting particulate matter. Furnaces, Incineration,
Boilers and Process Plants such as steel works, cement, chemicals, glass
and refining industries are now required to limit and continuously monitor
their emissions.
Backed by more than 30 years' experience in the design
and manufacture of flue gas monitoring instrumentation, SKIL Controls'
Visible Emission Monitor has been designed to meet the legal requirements
associated with smoke and dust emissions and assist in measuring the efficiency
of the process. The monitor is based on the well proven cross duct measuring
principle where visible light is projected across a duct or stack towards
a receiver. Any particulates passing through the light beam, absorb and
scatter the light, thereby reducing the intensity of the received light.
Utilising the latest solid state optical sensors combined with micro-processor
technology provides an accurate and reliable measure of smoke or dust
density emissions.
The Model 252 is based on the optical cross duct measuring
principle comprising of a stack mounted transmitter and receiver unit
with a remote micro-processor based monitor. The instrument has been designed
to project a stabilised light source and cancel the effect of any ambient
light, with the result of providing an accurate and reliable measure of
smoke or dust within the stack. The monitor displays a reading of the
percentage of opacity (Smoke Density), optical density or particulates
( mg/m3). The monitor performs the calculations to convert from opacity
to optical density for a direct reading of particulates concentration.
The Model 252 can be calibrated directly in terms of
dust density mg/m3 for each specific installation and flue condition by
calibrating against a specific measurement of emissions using the Iso-Kinetic
sampling technique. The monitor also offers a single or dual 4-20mA output
of opacity and particulates, the facility to adjust the alarm level with
volt free alarm output contacts and remote alarm or zero reset.
Efficient high volume blower units ensure that the optical
lenses are kept clean.
